Service at a Horse show

On Saturday September 18, I spent about 8 hours helping out at a horse show.  The show was at Rock Bridge Farm, where my horseback riding classes are.  We got there around 7:00am, before the show started.  We helped make sure the jumps were in place and at the right heights.  We wiped down the judges and secretaries’ desks.  We helped organize and distribute the ribbons to the arenas.

Once the show started we had more stuff to do.  We ran the judging papers between judges and recorders.  We handed out ribbons to the winners.  If a jump got knocked down, we put the poles back up.  We also helped adjust the jumps between the classes.  The jumps reversed direction for some classes.  The way the jumps are set up, they have boxes of flowers and pine branches in front of them.  To reverse the direction of the jump, we just moved the boxes and branches to the other side of the jumps.  We left at about 5:00pm.

It was a lot of fun to watch the show while we were working.  I had time to take a few pictures.  Our teacher was one of the announcers there.  She told us to watch the riders’ techniques and their postures.  The first class was the “green” horses. This class is professional riders on “green” horses. A green horse is one that hast little show experience and is learning how to run jump courses.  There were other classes for beginner riders and advanced riders.  The classes were also divided by age groups.
